Suck it, Serbia

Sure it was a warm up game.  But who cares!?  We knocked off a top 20 country, and not only that, it was a gutsy 1-0 win.  And while Kiwi Sports Blog abhors violence in sport, it is pretty awesome that the All Whites played well enough to get fans so angry that their own captain had to give them a scolding.  With short tempers like that it's no wonder Yugoslavia broke up.

Pool Play

Leaving aside any notion of beating Italy in our pool, what have Paraguay and Slovakia been up to lately?  Both are just coming off draws with good African sides - Paraguay against the Sven-Goran Eriksson coached, Didier Drogba led Ivory Coast (in other words, a tough opponent), and Slovakia, who are World Cup rookies this year, with Cameroon.  They are both ranked in the 30s, but we have just shown that we care about that as much as we care about pants for toll booth operators.  Could be time to visit the TAB and put that bet on for the All Whites to score 1 point - currently paying $2.70.

While I'm talking about Ivory Coast, did you see the picture of their uniform in that article?  Here it is:

Why do they look like they have waded through a muddy swamp to get to the game?  Is this a subtle jibe at Apartheid in South Africa, with the uniform depicting a brown-white divide?  It's a mystery.

As for Serbia, they are in a very tough pool with Germany, Australia, and the tournament dark horse, Ghana.  Australia must be backing their chances to get through to the second round, but Kiwi Sports Blog is backing Germany and Ghana to make it.

Ten days to go!  Take a look at this commercial to get yourself excited/give you the chills:
